This Emerson 888 Vanguard was manufactured in the USA in 1958. It is part of a famous line of patriotic Emerson radios with ‘Jet Age’ themes and this one was named after the Vanguard-1 Satellite. The US Navy launched the Vanguard 1, in March 1958. It was the second U.S. satellite in orbit, following the Explorer 1 by a month. Other Emerson radios in this series are named Satellite, Pioneer, Explorer and Atlas. I wonder if Emerson had to pay out the U.S. government for the use of those names….
